The Craft Behind Every Mykonos Piece
How handmade blue pottery is made — from raw earth to your Australian home
1. It Starts With Clay
Every Mykonos piece begins with raw clay, processed and kneaded into a smooth, workable form. The clay is blended with crushed quartz stone, glass powder, and Fuller's earth — a unique composition that gives blue pottery its signature smooth texture, refined finish, and distinctive lightness you notice the moment you hold a piece in your hands.
2. Shaped by Machine and Hand
The prepared clay is first shaped using a traditional potter's wheel and mould — giving each piece its core form with precision and consistency. But the machine only does half the work. Every piece is then finished entirely by hand, with artisans smoothing the edges, refining the rim, and perfecting the form. This combination of mechanical shaping and human finishing is what ensures both consistency and character in every piece.
3. Painted Freehand. Every Single Time.
This is where the craft becomes art. Skilled artisans paint every design by hand using mineral-based pigments — the iconic cobalt blue achieved through natural cobalt oxide, complemented by soft whites and earthy tones. There is no template, no stencil, no machine assistance. Every brushstroke is applied freehand by someone who has spent years perfecting their hand. That's why no two Mykonos pieces are ever identical.
4. Glazed for That Signature Finish
A transparent glaze made from glass powder and natural minerals is hand-applied over the painted surface. This is what gives blue pottery its luminous, glass-like sheen — deepening the colours, protecting the artwork beneath, and creating the polished finish that catches light differently throughout the day.
5. The Final Firing
Back into the kiln for a second and final firing. During this stage the glaze melts and fuses permanently with the surface, locking in the colours and bringing the finished piece to life. What comes out is something that feels complete — refined, timeless, and built to last.
6. From Workshop to Your Australian Home
Every Mykonos piece begins as raw clay and ends as a hand-painted work of art. No shortcuts, no machines doing the fine work — just skilled artisans carrying forward a craft that has existed for centuries. What arrives at your door has passed through dozens of human hands, each one leaving their mark. That's not something you can mass produce. That's Mykonos.
7. Inspected and Sent to You
After cooling, every piece is carefully inspected by hand before it joins the Mykonos collection. If it doesn't meet the standard, it doesn't ship. What arrives at your door has passed through dozens of human hands — each one adding something to the story of that piece.
From a workshop in Asia to your Australian home.
